Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.
The world needed a hero. It got Black Adam.
Black Adam is a 2022 superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The movie is a spin-off from Shazam! (2019) and the eleventh installment in the DC Extended Universe. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the film features Dwayne Johnson as the lead character, Teth-Adam, also known as Black Adam. The story follows Teth-Adam, an ancient superhuman who is awakened from magical imprisonment by a group of archaeologists. His mission is to save the nation of Kahndaq from the crime syndicate Intergang.
The film also stars Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Quintessa Swindell, Marwan Kenzari, and Pierce Brosnan. It explores themes of power and justice, posing questions about what it means to be a hero. Black Adam’s character is both complex and conflicted, often straddling the line between hero and antihero. The movie showcases intense action sequences and special effects, presenting a visually stunning experience.
Black Adam premiered in Mexico City on 3 October 2022 and was released theatrically in the United States on 21 October 2022. Upon release, it received mixed reviews from critics. The film's budget was between $190 million and $260 million, but it struggled at the box office, grossing approximately $393 million worldwide. This performance led to discussions about its profitability and potential future projects involving the character.
The narrative begins in 2600 BC, where the tyrant king Ahk-Ton enslaves the people of Kahndaq to mine for Eternium, a mythical metal he uses to create an all-powerful crown. A young slave boy is chosen by a council of wizards to become the champion, gaining superhuman abilities. He ultimately kills Ahk-Ton, freeing his people.
Fast forward to the present day, Kahndaq is under the control of Intergang. Archaeologist Adrianna Tomaz, along with her team, seeks the Crown of Sabbac. After a tragic encounter with Intergang forces, Adrianna accidentally awakens Teth-Adam, who then fights back against his captors. However, his violent methods draw the attention of the Justice Society of America, who are sent to stop him.
As the plot unfolds, it reveals Teth-Adam's tragic past, including the loss of his son, Hurut, which fuels his rage. This emotional backstory adds depth to his character, showing that his quest for vengeance is rooted in personal tragedy. The Justice Society members, including Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher, attempt to reason with him, emphasizing that violence is not the answer.
The film culminates in a confrontation with Ishmael Gregor, who is revealed to be the leader of Intergang and the last descendant of Ahk-Ton. The story takes a dramatic turn when Teth-Adam must confront not only external forces but also his own inner demons.
In the mid-credits scene, Amanda Waller warns Teth-Adam about leaving Kahndaq, introducing Superman into the storyline. The potential for future confrontations between Black Adam and other DC heroes is a tantalizing prospect for audiences. The film aims to set the stage for greater conflicts within the DCEU.
Overall, while Black Adam may not have hit the mark with all critics, it still provides an entertaining experience, particularly for fans of superhero films. The mix of action, special effects, and a touch of drama makes it a unique addition to the DC film lineup, though discussions surrounding its financial success and future are ongoing.
