Diabolik is a 2021 Italian film that falls into the crime action genre. Directed by the Manetti Bros., the movie is based on a popular comic series of the same name. This film marks the second adaptation of Diabolik, following the 1968 film Danger: Diabolik, directed by Mario Bava.
The movie made its premiere at the Noir in Festival on 15 December 2021 and was released in theaters in Italy on 16 December 2021. Following its success, two sequels were announced: Diabolik: Ginko Attacks! released on 17 November 2022, and Diabolik: Who Are You?, which was released on 30 November 2023.
The story follows the notorious thief Diabolik as he plans to steal a valuable diamond from heiress Eva Kant, who is romantically involved with the deputy minister of justice, Giorgio Caron. Diabolik employs one of his signature tactics by using a mask to impersonate his rival, Inspector Ginko, in order to trick Eva into revealing her hotel location. However, during their encounter, he becomes infatuated with her.
After sneaking into Eva's room to steal the diamond, Diabolik finds himself in a precarious situation when she catches him. To his surprise, Eva tells him she has already sold the diamond to a dealer in South Africa. The following day, Diabolik returns to unveil his identity to Eva. Displeased with her current partner, Eva begins an affair with Diabolik.
Meanwhile, Diabolik's girlfriend, Elisabeth, inadvertently discovers his secret hideout, leading to a sting operation arranged by Ginko that results in Diabolik's arrest. During the trial, he is sentenced to be executed by guillotine. When Eva learns of his impending fate, she arranges a secret meeting with him, where she incapacitates Giorgio to help Diabolik escape by masquerading as him.
As Diabolik attempts to secure funds for escape, he targets a bank known for holding valuable jewelry. He has Eva pretend to be a wealthy widow to gather intelligence on the bank's security. Using this information, Diabolik plans a heist that involves flooding the bank to facilitate their escape. However, Ginko, familiar with Diabolik's methods, gets close to apprehending him. In a tense moment, Eva distracts Ginko, allowing Diabolik to overpower him and escape with the loot on a motorboat.
In the final scenes, Diabolik and Eva are seen on a yacht. To celebrate their partnership, Diabolik presents Eva with the stolen diamond, but she chooses to throw it into the ocean, symbolizing that she no longer wishes to be tied to her past.
Featuring a talented cast, Luca Marinelli plays the role of Diabolik, while Miriam Leone stars as Eva Kant. Other notable cast members include Valerio Mastandrea as Inspector Ginko and Alessandro Roja as Giorgio Caron.
The film has garnered attention for its thrilling plot and engaging characters, making it a recommended watch for fans of action and crime stories.
