Dragonkeeper, an animated film set for release in 2024, is a captivating Spanish-Chinese fantasy adventure directed by Salvador Simó and Li Jianping. The screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by Carole Wilkinson, who also contributed to the script alongside Pablo Castrillo, Ignacio Ferreras, and Rosanna Checcini.
The film's story takes place during the Han Dynasty in China. It centers on a young girl named Ping, who is enslaved. Throughout her journey, she encounters Long Danzi, an ancient dragon. As dragons are no longer trusted and have been banished from the kingdom, Ping's discovery of one of the last dragon eggs sets off a quest that will change her fate. Alongside her rat friend Hua and Long Danzi, Ping must return the dragon egg to the ocean and save the remaining dragons from extinction.
The voice cast for the English version features notable talents such as:
This film is an adaptation of the first book in a six-part series by Carole Wilkinson, which was first announced in 2017 as a collaboration between Spain's Dragoia Media and China's China Film Group, along with several other production companies. The budget for the project is reported to be around €24 million.
The animation for Dragonkeeper was initiated by Ilion Animation Studios, but after being acquired by Skydance Animation, production was completed by a new studio called Guardián de Dragones. Additional assistance came from Sergio Pablos’s SPA Studios located in Madrid.
The film is set to debut at the 27th Málaga Film Festival on 1 March 2024 and will be released theatrically in Spain on 19 April 2024. It is expected to be shown in approximately 300 theaters across Spain. The film will also be released in the UK and Ireland on 27 September 2024, and in Australia and New Zealand on 16 January 2025. In North America, Viva Kids has acquired the distribution rights, with Hulu securing streaming rights for the film after its theater run.
