Ice Age, released on 15 March 2002, is an American animated film that blends adventure and comedy. Directed by Chris Wedge, the movie features the voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, and Denis Leary. Produced by Blue Sky Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox, this film marked a significant step for both the studio and the genre of animated films.
The story is set during the Pleistocene era and follows three main characters: Manny, a grumpy woolly mammoth; Sid, a talkative ground sloth; and Diego, a sly saber-toothed tiger. Their unexpected journey begins when they discover a human baby and decide to return it to its tribe. Along the way, they encounter Scrat, a comical saber-toothed squirrel who is constantly distracted by his desire to bury his acorn.
Originally, Ice Age was envisioned as a 2D animated film, but it evolved into a 3D feature as Blue Sky Studios shifted focus to full-length animation. The film's comedic tone was enhanced by the contributions of writers Michael Berg and Peter Ackerman, who adjusted the script to focus more on humor and character development.
Upon its release, Ice Age received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film grossed over $383 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2002. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, solidifying its impact on the animation industry.
Plot Summary
The film begins with a herd of prehistoric animals migrating south to escape the impending ice age. Sid, a clumsy sloth, is left behind and soon crosses paths with Manny, who prefers solitude. Their dynamic starts off rocky, especially as Sid's outgoing personality annoys Manny. However, when they encounter a human baby named Roshan, their adventure begins. They must navigate a series of challenges, including a vengeful saber-toothed tiger named Soto, who wants the baby for his own reasons.
As the trio faces various obstacles together, they form a bond that gradually changes their perspectives. Diego initially has ulterior motives but ultimately decides to protect Manny and Sid, leading to a climactic showdown with Soto's pack. The film concludes with a heartfelt reunion between Roshan and his family, along with the newfound friendship between the main characters.

Production Insights
The film's development began in 1997, with producer Lori Forte spearheading the project. Initially planned as a traditional animated feature, the shift to computer animation allowed for a fresh take on the story and its characters. A team of animators studied various animals to accurately depict their movements and behaviors, ensuring a level of realism while still embracing stylized animation.
The character of Scrat, who became a fan favorite, was originally meant to be a minor part of the story. However, his comedic antics were so well received that he was given additional scenes throughout the film. In fact, his silent, slapstick humor contrasts with the main characters' dialogue, adding an extra layer of charm to the film.
Reception and Legacy
Upon its release, Ice Age was praised for its humor, animation quality, and voice acting. It received a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its positive reception. The film not only succeeded at the box office but also laid the groundwork for a successful franchise, leading to several sequels, spin-offs, and merchandise.
Over the years, Ice Age has remained a beloved classic among audiences of all ages, remembered for its heartwarming message about friendship and family, set against a backdrop of prehistoric adventure.
