Her web connects them all.
Madame Web is a 2024 American superhero film that brings the Marvel Comics character of the same name to life. This film marks the fourth installment in Sony's Spider-Man Universe and features Dakota Johnson in the lead role. Alongside her are notable actors such as Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Tahar Rahim. Directed by S. J. Clarkson, who also contributed to the screenplay with Claire Parker, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless, the film explores the origin of Cassandra Webb, also known as Cassie, who must confront her past to rescue three young women targeted by Ezekiel Sims.
The film's development began in September 2019, with Sazama and Sharpless tasked with writing the script. Clarkson joined the project as director in May 2020, marking her debut in feature films. Johnson's casting was finalized in early 2022, followed by the inclusion of other cast members later on. Production kicked off in mid-July 2022, with filming taking place in Massachusetts, New York City, and Mexico. The film made its premiere at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, Los Angeles, on February 12, 2024, and hit theaters across the United States on February 14, 2024.
Although it had high expectations, Madame Web was met with unfavorable reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film had a budget between $80 million and $100 million but only managed to gross around $100.5 million worldwide, resulting in its classification as a box-office bomb.
The story begins in 1973, where a pregnant Constance Webb discovers a unique spider in the Amazon rainforest. Betrayed by Ezekiel Sims, Constance suffers a fatal injury while protecting the spider. Shortly after giving birth to Cassie, she dies, leaving her daughter to grow up without her. Fast forward thirty years, Cassie, who works as a paramedic in New York City, experiences a near-death incident that unlocks her psychic abilities, allowing her to see future events.
Ezekiel, now possessing enhanced powers, believes that three young women—Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazón, and Mattie Franklin—are destined to kill him as they transform into Spider-Women. Cassie intervenes when Ezekiel tries to target them, leading to a series of dramatic events where she ultimately faces the villain to save the girls. After a climactic confrontation, Cassie suffers serious injuries but gains the ability to see the future, vowing to mentor the young women in their potential roles as Spider-Women.
The film's cast includes:
The production faced various challenges, including significant changes to the script and a complex filming schedule. Despite these hurdles, Clarkson aimed to create a suspense-driven thriller with a unique take on the superhero genre, focusing on the emotional depth of Cassie's character.
Although the film featured aspects that resonated with some viewers, the overall execution fell short of expectations. Critics highlighted its weak plot and dialogue, leading to comparisons with previous disappointing superhero films, such as Morbius. The film received a mere 11% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that it was poorly received by the majority of critics.
In summary, Madame Web attempts to carve out a narrative within the superhero genre but ultimately struggles with execution. It faces the challenge of appealing to audiences familiar with the comic book lore while also trying to establish its own identity. As the film navigates its troubled reception, it remains to be seen how it will influence future projects within Sony's Spider-Man Universe.
