Act like a villain, think like a hero.
Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate is a 2024 animated superhero comedy film released directly for streaming. Directed by Eric Fogel, this movie is a sequel to the 2010 film Megamind and also serves as the pilot for the new television series Megamind Rules!, which premiered on the same day. The film features voices from talented actors like Keith Ferguson, Laura Post, and Josh Brener.
The story takes place shortly after the first film, with Megamind now taking on the role of a superhero, defending Metro City from a group of supervillains called the Doom Syndicate. This team consists of characters Megamind used to work with and now considers his enemies. The film explores themes of friendship, self-worth, and the importance of teamwork.
After stopping a crime duo known as the Go-Fish gang, Megamind is awarded the key to the city. His sidekick, Ol' Chum (formerly Minion), feels neglected and aspires to be his partner. However, when Megamind refuses his request, Chum decides to explore other opportunities, leading to a growing rift between them.
The Doom Syndicate escapes from prison to confront Megamind, believing his superhero act is just a facade for an evil plan. They initiate a series of crimes and challenge Megamind to prove he is still villainous by robbing a bank. With help from his fan, Keiko Morita, Megamind stages a fake robbery to keep up appearances. Meanwhile, Chum struggles at a rundown diner as he grapples with his worth in Megamind's life.
As tensions rise, Megamind concocts a scheme involving a launch that would send Metro City to the Moon, aiming to trick the Doom Syndicate into helping him. However, when they discover his deception, Megamind must face the consequences. Feeling overwhelmed, he hides away but is reminded by Roxanne and Keiko that it’s okay to ask for assistance. Chum returns, and together, they confront the Doom Syndicate, ultimately redirecting Metro City back to safety.
In the end, Roxanne is voted in as the new Mayor of Metro City, while Megamind feels fulfilled with his new team alongside Chum, Roxanne, and Keiko. A humorous mid-credits scene sees the Doom Syndicate back in prison, visited by Megamind's old mentor, Machiavillain.
Despite the interesting premise and familiar characters, the film has not received favorable reviews. Critics have pointed out that Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate is considered a letdown compared to its predecessor. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an approval rating of just 9%, with many labeling it as a weak follow-up.
Viewers have described the film as lacking the charm and creativity of the original, with some noting that it feels like a rehash rather than a new adventure. Director Eric Fogel expressed pride in the team's efforts, despite the film's struggles and budget constraints.
Overall, while Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate may draw in fans of the original movie and the new series, it seems to fall short in delivering a memorable experience, making it one of the more disappointing releases of 2024.
