All pirates must die.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, also known internationally as Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge, is a fantasy adventure film released on 26 May 2017 in the United States. Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, the film is the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, featuring Johnny Depp returning as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow.
The storyline follows Captain Jack Sparrow as he seeks the mythical Trident of Poseidon to defeat Captain Armando Salazar, played by Javier Bardem. Salazar is a vengeful ghost who is determined to eliminate all pirates at sea, particularly seeking revenge against Sparrow for trapping him in the Devil's Triangle.
Development for Dead Men Tell No Tales began in early 2011, shortly before the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Initially written by Terry Rossio, the script underwent significant revisions over the years. Jeff Nathanson was later brought in to write the final version. Filming took place in Australia from February to July 2015, with a budget estimated between $230-$320 million.
Upon its release, the film received mostly negative reviews from critics, holding a score of 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 39. Despite this, it grossed approximately $795.9 million globally, becoming the highest-grossing entry in the franchise outside North America.
The film features a mix of new and returning characters. Alongside Depp and Bardem, the cast includes Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner, the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth, an astronomer wrongfully accused of witchcraft. The story intertwines their journeys as they join forces against Salazar.
The action takes the audience through supernatural encounters, including ghostly battles and daring escapes. The visual effects achieved significant attention, particularly the portrayal of Salazar and his undead crew. The film's tone aims to capture the humor and adventurous spirit reminiscent of the original Pirates of the Caribbean film.
Despite its mixed reviews, Dead Men Tell No Tales was marketed as a return to form for the franchise and showcased at various events leading up to its release, including a premiere at the Shanghai Disney Resort on 11 May 2017.
