Fear finds new depths.
Something in the Water is a British survival thriller film that debuted on 21 June 2024. Directed by Hayley Easton Street and written by Cat Clarke, the film tells the gripping story of friends who get stranded at sea during a wedding celebration in the Caribbean.
The main characters include Meg (played by Hiftu Quasem), Kayla (Natalie Mitson), Cam (Nicole Rietsu Setsuko), Lizzie (Lauren Lyle), and Ruth (Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart). The plot begins with a traumatic event where Meg and Kayla are attacked by thugs after a date, which leaves Meg severely injured.
A year later, Meg joins her friends for Lizzie's wedding in the West Indies. Tensions rise as Kayla, the one who was with Meg during the attack, is also present. On the day before the wedding, the group rents a boat to visit a nearby island. While there, Ruth suffers a shark bite, and as they try to get back to the resort, their boat capsizes due to a leak.
Stranded and in the middle of the ocean, the friends face dire circumstances: Ruth succumbs to her injuries, and the group must contend with a circling shark. As Kayla attempts to swim for help, Cam meets a tragic fate when he is attacked. With growing despair, Lizzie and Meg are left clinging to a buoy as night falls.
After a violent storm, Meg finds herself alone, having lost Lizzie, who sacrificed herself to save Meg. Just when it seems all hope is lost, Kayla arrives with a rescue boat. The film concludes with the two women deciding to return home together, bonded by their shared trauma.
Filming for Something in the Water took place in the Dominican Republic and London. As of June 2024, the film has received mixed reviews, currently holding a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics highlighted the film's tension and character dynamics but also pointed out weaknesses in dialogue and character development.
The movie has a running time of 86 minutes and has grossed approximately $1.4 million at the box office. It stands as a thrilling tale of survival and resilience amid the ocean's dangers.
