The evil Darth Sidious enacts his final plan for unlimited power -- and the heroic Jedi Anakin Skywalker must choose a side.
The saga is complete.
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, released on 19 May 2005, is an American space opera film directed and written by George Lucas. As the third film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, it serves as a direct sequel to The Phantom Menace (1999) and Attack of the Clones (2002). This movie is a pivotal installment in the overall Skywalker Saga and marks Lucas's final chapter in the saga he created. The film stars notable actors such as Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Hayden Christensen.
Revenge of the Sith unfolds during the turbulent Clone Wars, set three years after the events of Attack of the Clones. The Jedi are engaged in a full-scale conflict against the Separatists. Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi is sent on a mission to eliminate General Grievous, the leader of the Separatist forces. Meanwhile, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker is consumed by visions of his secret wife, Padmé Amidala, dying during childbirth. Anakin's task of spying on Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who is secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, leads him to a dark path filled with manipulation and betrayal.
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 15 May 2005, before its worldwide release on 19 May 2005. Critics generally praised the film, with many considering it the best in the prequel trilogy, despite some critiques of the screenplay and Christensen's acting. At the box office, it broke several records, grossing $868.4 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of its time.
As the story progresses, Obi-Wan and Anakin attempt to rescue Chancellor Palpatine from Grievous. In a confrontation with Count Dooku, Anakin follows Palpatine's suggestion and kills Dooku, marking a significant moment in his descent towards the dark side. As Anakin grapples with his visions of Padmé’s future, Palpatine further tempts him by revealing the power of the dark side, promising that he can save her life.
The film's climax sees Anakin's eventual turn to Darth Vader following a series of manipulative events orchestrated by Palpatine. Anakin assists in executing Order 66, which leads to the massacre of the Jedi. In a heartbreaking confrontation, Obi-Wan battles Anakin on the volcanic planet Mustafar, resulting in severe injuries for Anakin and his transformation into Darth Vader.
Eventually, Obi-Wan and another Jedi Master, Yoda, survive the purge. Yoda instructs Obi-Wan to confront Anakin, leading to the tragic events where Padmé gives birth to twins, Luke and Leia, before dying. The film ends with the birth of the twin children and their separation for protection, setting the stage for future events in the series.
Notable performances include Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Natalie Portman as Padmé Amidala, Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, and Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine/Darth Sidious. The musical score, composed by John Williams, adds emotional depth to the film, complementing its dramatic moments and epic battles.
Overall, Revenge of the Sith is widely regarded as a significant film within the Star Wars franchise, encapsulating themes of love, betrayal, and the struggle between good and evil. Its combination of action, drama, and a compelling story resonates with audiences, solidifying its place in cinema history.
