The untold story begins.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2, released on 2 May 2014, is a superhero film based on the popular Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. Directed by Marc Webb, the film features Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man. This movie is the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and is part of the The Amazing Spider-Man series.
The film also stars Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, and Dane DeHaan, among others. In this installment, Peter Parker grapples with his responsibilities as Spider-Man, while trying to protect his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, and uncover the mystery behind his parents’ deaths. At the same time, he faces off against the supervillain Electro and his childhood friend Harry Osborn, who becomes the Green Goblin.
Filming took place in New York City from February to June 2013. The movie was released in various formats including 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D. It garnered mixed reviews upon release, with praise directed toward the chemistry between Garfield and Stone, the action sequences, and the visual effects. However, critics pointed out weaknesses in the screenplay and the overly complex plot with too many storylines.
The film was produced by Columbia Pictures in collaboration with several other studios, including Marvel Entertainment and Arad Productions. It had a budget estimated between $200 million and $293 million and went on to earn around $716.9 million at the box office, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2014.
Despite its commercial success, the future of the franchise became uncertain after the release. Plans for a third film and spinoff projects were announced but later canceled. In February 2015, Sony Pictures entered a partnership with Marvel Studios, leading to a reboot of the Spider-Man character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thus, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 became the final installment in its series.
The film's narrative begins with Richard Parker, Peter's father, attempting to explain his disappearance through a video message. He and his wife, Mary, die in a plane crash due to an assassin's attack. Fast-forward two years, Peter is now a crime-fighting Spider-Man but is burdened by the promise he made to Gwen's father to stay away from her. Their relationship faces challenges, especially when Harry Osborn returns, revealing he is also suffering from a genetic illness that may be cured by Spider-Man's blood.
Meanwhile, Max Dillon, an electrical engineer at Oscorp, accidentally gets transformed into the villain Electro after falling into a tank of electric eels. Dillon becomes obsessed with Spider-Man after being saved by him, leading to a confrontation that results in chaos. Harry, desperate for a cure, engages with Dillon, who now dons the name Electro, further complicating matters.
As the plot unfolds, both Peter and Gwen face heart-wrenching challenges. When their relationship is once again tested, tragedy strikes. Gwen's heartbreaking death at the hands of the Green Goblin leaves Peter devastated, leading him to abandon his superhero identity for a time.
After a five-month period, the story closes with Harry Osborn, now transformed, planning revenge, while Peter, inspired by Gwen’s legacy, returns as Spider-Man to face new threats including the Rhino.
The film is visually striking, featuring impressive special effects and stunts, and has a soundtrack led by renowned composer Hans Zimmer. Its themes of love, loss, and responsibility resonate throughout the narrative, making it a memorable, albeit flawed, entry in the Spider-Man franchise.
