The Convert

The Convert is a gripping historical drama set in 1830s New Zealand, directed by Lee Tamahori. The film features a talented cast, including Guy Pearce, Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne, and Te Kohe Tuhaka. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 07 September 2023. It will be released in New Zealand on 14 March 2024, followed by a release in Australia on 20 June 2024.

The story follows Thomas Munro, a lay minister from Britain, who arrives in New Zealand aboard a storm-damaged ship. During a conflict between two Māori tribes, he intervenes to save Rangimai, the daughter of a chieftain, trading his horse for her life. After being brought to a British settlement named Epworth, Munro becomes her religious teacher.

Despite a supposed agreement allowing the settlers to live on the land, Munro and Rangimai face discrimination from the community. Tragedy strikes when a young Māori warrior named Pahirua, who was meant to protect her, is murdered. The tension escalates, leading Munro to suggest that the tribe raise the rent paid by the settlers rather than retaliate.

As Munro tries to foster peace between the tribes, he discovers the complexities of their struggles. The narrative dives deep into his past as a soldier, revealing his quest for redemption after witnessing atrocities in war. In an attempt to broker peace, he sails to the other tribe's territory but is met with hostility. Ultimately, he participates in a decisive battle where the tribes collide.

As the conflict comes to a climax, significant choices are made for the future of both tribes, with Rangimai agreeing to marry the spared son of her enemies, highlighting themes of reconciliation and cultural integration.

The film's production took place in various locations around New Zealand, including the scenic beaches of West Auckland. Filming began in September 2022 and concluded by November of the same year. The film was funded by the New Zealand Film Commission and is being distributed worldwide by a British distribution company.
