The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is a 2014 American action film based on the third book of Suzanne Collins' popular series. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film serves as the sequel to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) and is the third installment in the film series. The screenplay was adapted by Peter Craig and Danny Strong.
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Julianne Moore, the film follows Katniss Everdeen, who becomes a symbol of rebellion against the oppressive Capitol.
The story unfolds as Katniss, after surviving the harrowing 75th Hunger Games, is rescued and brought to District 13—a secret underground location leading the fight against the Capitol. Here, she teams up with President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) and others to inspire various districts to revolt. Katniss reluctantly agrees to become the "Mockingjay" after witnessing the Capitol's manipulation of Peeta, her fellow tribute, on television.
Production for the film began in September 2013 across various locations, including Boston, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. The decision to split the final book into two films came in July 2012, allowing for a more detailed adaptation of the source material. The film premiered on 10 November 2014 in London and was released in the United States on 21 November 2014.
Upon its release, Mockingjay – Part 1 received a mix of positive reviews. Critics praised the performances, especially that of Jennifer Lawrence, and the film's thought-provoking political themes. However, some criticized its pacing and the decision to divide the story. The movie grossed over $755 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2014.
Among its accolades, the film earned a nomination for Best Science Fiction Film at the Saturn Awards. The lead single from its soundtrack, "Yellow Flicker Beat" by Lorde, received a nomination for Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards.
Despite its successes, director Francis Lawrence later expressed regret over splitting Mockingjay into two parts, acknowledging that it frustrated fans. The fourth and final film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, was released a year later on 20 November 2015.
