Return to the Source.
The Matrix Resurrections is a 2021 American science fiction action film. Directed by Lana Wachowski, this installment marks the first time she directed a Matrix movie alone. The film continues the story from The Matrix Revolutions (2003) and is the fourth film in the Matrix franchise. It features returning stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, alongside a new cast that includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jessica Henwick.
Set sixty years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, the story follows Neo, who now lives an ordinary life as a video game developer. He struggles to differentiate between reality and the game he created based on his memories. A team of rebels, aided by a new version of Morpheus, seeks to rescue Neo from a new iteration of the Matrix and confront a new threat that holds Trinity captive.
After the release of Revolutions, the original creators, the Wachowskis, dismissed the idea of continuing the franchise. However, in late 2019, Warner Bros. announced that a fourth film was in the works, with Wachowski returning as director. Principal photography began in February 2020 but faced interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming resumed later that year and concluded in November.
The film premiered at the Castro Theater in San Francisco on 16 December 2021 and was released in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming service on 22 December 2021. Despite receiving generally favorable reviews, it underperformed at the box office, grossing $159 million against a $190 million budget. The film was nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 75th British Academy Film Awards, and plans for a sequel are already in development.
The story begins with a character named Bugs who recognizes that the Matrix is stuck in a repetitive loop of past events. She finds a program that embodies Morpheus and helps him escape. Meanwhile, Neo, now known as Thomas Anderson, is experiencing issues with reality and takes blue pills to suppress his confusion. As Bugs and Morpheus work to rescue him, Anderson's partner begins to regain memories of his former life as Agent Smith.
Neo awakens to find himself in a pod, realizing Trinity is trapped nearby. He is rescued by Bugs and brought to the city of Io, where he learns that the world has changed significantly since the Machine War. Neo's allies have aged and passed away, and the city now faces new threats. As he tries to free Trinity, Neo faces obstacles from Smith and other exiled programs.
As Neo and his friends work to reestablish their connection with Trinity, they must confront The Analyst, a program who manipulates their emotions and desires to generate power for the Matrix. This leads to intense battles within the Matrix, culminating in a climactic showdown where Neo and Trinity reclaim their identities and powers. The film explores themes of love, identity, and the struggle against oppressive systems.
Overall, The Matrix Resurrections presents a mix of nostalgia and new ideas, aiming to resonate with both longtime fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. While its reception has been mixed, it remains an ambitious continuation of a beloved series.
