A graphic portrayal of the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth's life.
By his wounds, we were healed.
The Passion of the Christ is a dramatic film released in the United States on 25 February 2004. Directed and co-written by Mel Gibson, the movie stars Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ, Maia Morgenstern as Mary, and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. The storyline draws heavily from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, focusing on the final twelve hours of Jesus's life.
The film begins in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus experiences great anguish. It continues with his betrayal by Judas Iscariot, his brutal beating by Roman guards, and ultimately, his crucifixion. While the film portrays Jesus's suffering, it also includes flashbacks to significant moments in his life, such as The Last Supper and The Sermon on the Mount. The entire dialogue is presented in reconstructed Aramaic, Hebrew, and Latin.
Despite the film's polarizing reception, it achieved remarkable commercial success, grossing over $612 million worldwide. Critics had mixed reviews, with some praising its artistic representation and emotional depth, while others criticized it for extreme violence and perceived antisemitism. It became the highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. for 20 years, until it was surpassed by another film in 2024. The film received three Academy Award nominations in 2005 for Best Makeup, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.
Gibson has stated that the film is intended to convey themes of love, hope, faith, and forgiveness. Throughout its production, he sought guidance from religious advisors and aimed to remain true to the essence of the Gospel narratives. Gibson faced challenges in obtaining distribution due to controversies surrounding the film's content. Eventually, he opted to self-distribute the film with the help of Newmarket Films.
The film’s impact extended beyond the box office. Many church organizations promoted it as a tool for evangelism, and it sparked discussions about the portrayal of the Passion in cinema. While it has been criticized for its graphic depiction of violence, supporters emphasize that it serves as a powerful visual representation of Jesus's sacrifice.
As of now, a sequel is in development, with Caviezel and Gibson both returning to their respective roles. The sequel is expected to explore the resurrection of Jesus and the events surrounding it.
