The Suicide Squad is a 2021 American superhero movie based on the DC Comics team known as the Suicide Squad. Directed and written by James Gunn, this film serves as a standalone sequel to the 2016 film Suicide Squad and is the tenth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). It features a star-studded cast including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, and Viola Davis.
The movie follows a group of imprisoned criminals, known as the "Suicide Squad," who are offered reduced sentences in exchange for completing dangerous missions. They are assigned to the South American island of Corto Maltese to eliminate evidence of the alien creature known as Starro the Conqueror, which the local government wants to control.
Initially, Gavin O'Connor was set to direct the film, but he left due to creative differences. Eventually, Gunn took over the project after being temporarily dismissed by Disney. Inspired by war films and the classic 1980s comics, Gunn’s vision for The Suicide Squad included a mix of humor and action. The film was shot primarily in Atlanta, Georgia, and also featured locations in Panama and Portugal.
The Suicide Squad opened in the United Kingdom on 30 July 2021 and in the United States on 5 August 2021, available both in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max. Although the film did not perform well at the box office, grossing approximately $169 million against a budget of $185 million, it received positive reviews from critics and became the most-streamed DCEU film on HBO Max.
In addition, a spinoff series, Peacemaker, starring Cena, premiered on HBO Max in January 2022. Another series focused on Amanda Waller is currently in development.
The film’s plot features Amanda Waller, an intelligence officer who assembles two teams of Task Force X. The members are criminals from the Belle Reve penitentiary who agree to participate in risky missions for lighter sentences. The teams are sent to Corto Maltese after a government coup. Their mission involves destroying a secret laboratory, which harbors Project Starfish, an experiment that has gone horribly wrong.
Upon arriving, most of the first team is ambushed and killed, while some members of the second team manage to infiltrate the area unnoticed. The second team, led by Bloodsport, encounters challenges as they search for Rick Flag, who has been captured. The group must navigate traps and fight against local military forces to complete their mission.
The climax of the film comes when the alien Starro escapes and wreaks havoc on the island. Even as Waller attempts to call the mission off, the squad rallies to fight against the creature. The film concludes with the surviving members escaping, having achieved their goals.
As a film, The Suicide Squad highlights themes of teamwork, redemption, and the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. Critics have noted its blend of irreverent humor and intense action, positioning it as a fresh take on the superhero genre. Many reviews praised it for elevating the franchise, showcasing Gunn's unique storytelling style.
With a runtime of 132 minutes, The Suicide Squad is a mix of fun, chaos, and character-driven storytelling that sets it apart from its predecessor while establishing a new narrative direction for the DCEU.
