When Branch's brother, Floyd, is kidnapped for his musical talents by a pair of nefarious pop-star villains, Branch and Poppy embark on a harrowing and emotional journey to reunite the other brothers and rescue Floyd from a fate even worse than pop-culture obscurity.
There are some new trolls on the block.
Trolls Band Together is a vibrant animated musical comedy that made its debut in theaters, continuing the beloved Trolls franchise. Released in Denmark on 12 October 2023 and in the United States on 17 November 2023, this film has already made quite an impact at the box office, grossing over $209 million worldwide.
Directed by Walt Dohrn and co-directed by Tim Heitz, the film features a screenplay by Elizabeth Tippet. It's based on the classic Good Luck Trolls dolls created by Thomas Dam. The movie brings back familiar voices from previous installments, including Anna Kendrick as Poppy and Justin Timberlake as Branch, along with a host of new talent, such as Eric André, Kid Cudi, and Amy Schumer.
The story follows a couple, Branch and Poppy, as they embark on an adventure to rescue Branch's brother, Floyd, who has been captured by two aspiring pop stars, Velvet and Veneer. The movie explores themes of family, teamwork, and the importance of unity as the characters strive to reclaim their bond and save Floyd.
In a flashback, we see Branch as a baby in a boyband with his brothers called BroZone. Their inability to harmonize leads to their breakup, leaving Branch to grow up without his family. Fast forward to the present, Branch and Poppy attend a wedding, where they learn of Floyd's plight and set off on a quest with the help of their friends.
The film incorporates a mix of CGI and some 2D animation that pays homage to classic films like Yellow Submarine and Fantasia. The score, composed by Theodore Shapiro, includes the newly released song "Better Place" performed by NSYNC, marking the group's return to music after 22 years.
Critics have responded positively, with the film receiving a rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have enjoyed the film as well, giving it an average grade of "A" on CinemaScore. Reviewers have noted the humor and lively animation as highlights, although some indicate signs of franchise fatigue.
As for the cast, it includes a range of notable voices, with Kendrick and Timberlake leading the pack, joined by Kunal Nayyar, Troye Sivan, and Camila Cabello, among others. The film's charm and catchy music promise to entertain both children and adults alike.
For those interested in exploring this musical journey, Trolls Band Together is set to be available on VOD from 19 December 2023, with physical releases following on 16 January 2024. The film will also later stream on Peacock and Netflix, making it accessible for home viewing.
