He is recognized for his remarkable roles, particularly as the legendary Ip Man, the Wing Chun grandmaster, in the critically acclaimed Ip Man film series, which includes four installments released from 2008 to 2019.
Raised in a family rooted in the arts, Yen's mother, Bow-sim Mark, is a grandmaster in traditional Chinese martial arts, particularly tai chi, and his father, Klyster Yen, was a newspaper editor. When Yen was two years old, his family relocated to Hong Kong, and later to the United States in 1974, settling in Boston. His upbringing combined music and martial arts, as he was encouraged to play various musical instruments from a young age, including the piano.
Yen's journey in martial arts began early, inspired by his mother's teachings. He explored different styles, including tai chi and traditional Chinese martial arts. At the age of 16, he trained with the Beijing Wushu Team in China, where he honed his skills further. Yen transitioned to Hollywood in the early 2000s, appearing in films such as Highlander: Endgame (2000) and a cameo in Blade II (2002). He continued to gain popularity in American cinema with roles in Shanghai Knights (2003), Rogue One (2016), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). His impressive choreographic work has been recognized in various international productions, and he remains a staple in the Hong Kong film industry, consistently delivering high-quality performances and action sequences.

He later married former beauty queen Cissy Wang in 2003, with whom he has two children, Jasmine and James. Outside of acting, Yen has engaged in various charitable efforts, including establishing the Yen's Honour Protection Fund to support the rights of celebrities and donating to various causes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
