Acting
Eva Gaëlle Green was born on 6 July 1980 in Paris, France. She is a well-known actress who has made a significant impact in both independent and blockbuster films. The daughter of French actress Marlène Jobert and Dr. Walter Green, a Swedish dental surgeon, Eva developed a passion for acting early in life. She began her career in theater before making her film debut in the controversial film The Dreamers in 2003, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci.
Green gained international recognition for her role as Sibylla, Queen of Jerusalem in the historical epic Kingdom of Heaven released in 2005. The following year, she portrayed the iconic Bond girl Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, a performance that earned her the BAFTA Rising Star Award. Her career continued to flourish as she took on various roles that highlighted her versatility, including appearances in films like Cracks (2009), Womb (2010), and Perfect Sense (2011).
In 2014, Green played Artemisia in 300: Rise of an Empire and Ava Lord in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Her collaboration with director Tim Burton solidified her reputation, as she starred in Dark Shadows (2012), Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016), and Dumbo (2019). For her moving performance as an astronaut mother in Proxima (2019), she received a nomination for the César Award for Best Actress.
Green's television career also gained traction, with significant roles in the Starz series Camelot (2011) and the acclaimed horror drama series Penny Dreadful (2014–2016). Her portrayal of Vanessa Ives garnered critical acclaim and a nomination for the Golden Globe Awards.
Raised in a family with a rich artistic background, Green was born two minutes before her twin sister, Joy. She has a mixed heritage with Jewish roots through her mother, who was born in Algeria. Despite her family’s artistic influences, Green faced initial resistance from her mother about pursuing an acting career, as she was considered a sensitive child. However, her mother eventually supported her ambitions.
Green's upbringing in France, along with her education at the American University of Paris and the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, shaped her artistic career. Known for her unique style and strong performances, she often chooses complex roles that allow her to explore psychological themes.
In April 2018, it was announced that she would star in the sci-fi thriller A Patriot. However, the project was abandoned, leading to a legal battle over a contract dispute. Green won the lawsuit in April 2023, confirming her commitment to the project.
As of 2023, Green has appeared in the Apple TV+ series Liaison alongside Vincent Cassel and portrayed Milady de Winter in two French adaptations of Alexandre Dumas' classic novel The Three Musketeers.
Living in London since 2005, Green has expressed her preference for the English lifestyle over her native France. Describing herself as a "homebody," she enjoys quiet evenings with a good book and has a keen interest in psychology, taxidermy, and entomology. Despite her success in Hollywood, she remains grounded, focused on finding meaningful roles that resonate with her artistic vision.
