Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal, commonly known as Jake Gyllenhaal, was born on 19 December 1980, in Los Angeles, California. He comes from a family deeply rooted in the film industry, being the son of film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner. Gyllenhaal has an older sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is also an accomplished actress.
