Mads Mikkelsen

Mads Dittmann Mikkelsen, born on 22 November 1965, is a celebrated Danish actor known for his diverse roles in films and television. He gained early recognition in Denmark for his performances in the Pusher film trilogy (1996, 2004) and the TV series Rejseholdet (2000-2004). His international fame skyrocketed after portraying the villain Le Chiffre in the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006).

Mikkelsen's filmography includes notable performances as Igor Stravinsky in Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (2008), Johann Friedrich Struensee in A Royal Affair (2012), and Lucas in The Hunt (2012), for which he won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also appeared in blockbuster films such as Doctor Strange (2016) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). His recent roles include Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022) and Dr. Jürgen Voller in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).

Raised in Copenhagen, Mikkelsen grew up in the Østerbro district. His mother, Bente, and father, Henning, a cab driver, nurtured his passion for performance. Initially training as a gymnast, Mikkelsen later studied dance at the Balettakademien in Gothenburg, Sweden. There, he met choreographer Hanne Jacobsen, whom he married in 2000 and with whom he has two children. Mikkelsen transitioned to acting by attending the Århus Theatre School in 1996.

His acting journey began with a role as a drug dealer in Pusher, and he quickly became a popular figure in Danish cinema. Mikkelsen's versatility shone through in various genres, from comedies like Shake It All About (2001) to serious dramas such as Open Hearts (2002). His performance in The Green Butchers (2003) earned him the Fantasporto Award for Best Actor.

In 2006, his portrayal of Le Chiffre in Casino Royale marked a significant turning point in his career, establishing him as a formidable presence in Hollywood. Critics praised his chilling performance, noting the suspense he brought to the film's iconic poker scene. Following this success, Mikkelsen starred in various acclaimed films and received several award nominations and wins, solidifying his status as a leading actor.

Beyond the big screen, Mikkelsen's work includes his role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the NBC series Hannibal (2013-2015), which garnered him critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. He expressed initial hesitation about stepping into a role famously played by Anthony Hopkins, but his unique interpretation of Lecter was widely celebrated.

In addition to his film and television accolades, Mikkelsen has received numerous honors, including being named a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 2010 and a Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2016 by the French government.

As of 2023, Mikkelsen continues to work on a variety of projects, including his role in the upcoming film The Promised Land and a collaboration with Bryan Fuller on the film Dust Bunny.
