An angel falls. A warrior rises.
Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American action film set in a cyberpunk world. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, the movie is based on the manga series Battle Angel Alita by Yukito Kishiro. The screenplay was co-written by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis.
The film features Rosa Salazar as Alita, a cyborg who awakens in a new body with no memories of her past. She embarks on a journey to discover her identity and destiny, encountering various characters along the way, including Christoph Waltz as Dr. Dyson Ido, Jennifer Connelly as Dr. Chiren, Mahershala Ali as Vector, and Ed Skrein as Zapan.
The story is set in the year 2563, 300 years after a devastating war. Dr. Ido, a scientist, discovers Alita's disembodied head in a junkyard and revives her using a new cyborg body. As Alita tries to adapt to her new life, she forms a bond with a boy named Hugo, who dreams of traveling to the sky city of Zalem. However, their lives become complicated when Alita gets involved in a deadly sport called Motorball and faces threats from powerful figures like Vector.
Initially announced in 2003, the film faced multiple delays due to Cameron's commitments to the Avatar sequels. Rodriguez was confirmed as the director in April 2016, and principal photography took place in Austin, Texas, from October 2016 to February 2017.
After premiering at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on 31 January 2019, Alita: Battle Angel was released in the United States on 14 February 2019. It grossed approximately $405 million worldwide on a budget estimated between $150 million and $200 million, making it Rodriguez's highest-grossing film. While the visual effects and action sequences received praise, critics expressed mixed opinions about the screenplay, noting that the story often struggled to match the film's stunning visuals.
The cast also features Jackie Earle Haley as Grewishka and Keean Johnson as Hugo, Alita's love interest. Other notable performances include Eiza González as Nyssiana and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as Tanji.
Alita: Battle Angel has sparked discussions about potential sequels, with both Rodriguez and Cameron expressing interest in continuing the story. As of now, a sequel is in development, which fans eagerly anticipate.
