Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg, known as Jean-Claude Van Damme, was born on 18 October 1960 in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, a suburb of Brussels, Belgium. His father, Eugène, was an accountant, and his mother, Eliana, worked as a florist. Van Damme grew up in a bilingual household, which influenced his early life. He was raised Roman Catholic, with a paternal grandmother of Jewish descent.

At the age of ten, Jean-Claude began training in karate. He eventually earned a 2nd Dan black belt and competed in various karate and kickboxing competitions. In his teens, he earned the title of Mr. Belgium in bodybuilding in 1978 and won the European Professional Karate Association's middleweight championship in 1979. His early experiences in martial arts shaped his future career as an action star.

In 1982, driven by a desire to act, Van Damme moved to the United States. Initially, he struggled to make ends meet, doing odd jobs and working as a bouncer.
