Thunder buddies for life.
Ted 2 is a fantasy comedy film that came out on 26 June 2015. Directed by Seth MacFarlane, who also voiced the titular character Ted, the film serves as a sequel to the original Ted from 2012. MacFarlane co-wrote the film's script with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild.
The movie picks up three years after the first film. Ted, now married to Tami-Lynn, faces challenges when they decide to start a family. However, complications arise when Ted seeks legal recognition to adopt a child, as authorities deem him property, not a person. This leads to a court battle that explores themes of identity and civil rights.
In the film, Ted attempts to fight for his rights as he aims to adopt a child. He is joined by his best friend John Bennett, played by Mark Wahlberg. The couple, after encountering setbacks, eventually decides to adopt. But when the state rules against Ted's personhood, he faces severe consequences. Ted loses his job, his finances are frozen, and his marriage faces turmoil.
To fight this injustice, they enlist the help of a novice lawyer, Sam Jackson, played by Amanda Seyfried. Together, they aim to overturn the ruling, but the journey is filled with challenges, including facing Ted's lifelong stalker, Donny, portrayed by Giovanni Ribisi.
The film features various comedic elements and cameos, including Morgan Freeman as Patrick Meighan, a civil rights attorney who ultimately helps Ted fight for his rights in court.
Despite some criticisms, the film performed well at the box office, grossing approximately $216.7 million worldwide against a budget of $68 million. Though it did not match the success of its predecessor, it found its audience and remained popular among fans.
The film's soundtrack was released on the same day as the movie, featuring scores by Walter Murphy and songs co-written by Murphy and MacFarlane.
For those interested in the franchise, a prequel television series is set to stream on Peacock starting from 11 January 2024.
In summary, Ted 2 offers a blend of humor and social commentary as it navigates the absurdities surrounding a teddy bear's quest for personhood, all wrapped in the charm of its returning cast and the unique comedic style of Seth MacFarlane.
